Is a successful/rewarding career of professional and military achievements without a college degree still realistic in today’s Coast Guard?

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. The purpose of the Walter Gore Memorial Scholarship is to assist members of the CPOA/CGEA in defraying expenses incurred at a university, college or vocational school of acceptance.

2. Please complete all information on the application. Incomplete applications may not be processed. 

3. Eligibility requirements:

  • Be a member “in good standing” of USCG CPOA/CGEA for at least one year regardless of age.
  • Furnish a copy of a letter of acceptance from a college, university or vocational school you plan to attend. This must be submitted with your application.
  • If attending a college, university or vocational school, you must provide proof of enrollment with your application.

4. Submitted essays shall not exceed 500 words and must state the essay topic on the top of the submission. Essays will be judged on style and content. Judges will look for essays that are clear, articulate and logically organized. The USCG CPOA reserves the right to choose the recipient of the scholarship as it deems fit. A committee of judges shall be appointed, and their decision is final. By entering this contest, winning applicants agree to have their essays printed in full or in part in “The Chief” Magazine and on our web site. Winners may be asked to provide a photograph suitable for publication.

5. Plagiarism/use of AI tools: CPOA has the right to run all entries through plagiarism software and disqualify those entries we determine were not the sole product of the applicant.

6. Two grants up to $500.00 each will be awarded to the individuals submitting the top two entries.

Applications received after 1 April will not be processed.
